When MSN messenger 7.5 starts on startup, it ALWAYS fails and sends an error report.

I also use Apache for a local host webserver.

When I enable Apache, and then run MSN messenger, there are no problems.

They wrote back with instructions to uninstall and reinstall. I’ve just upgraded to the Messenger Live, and it still crashes. When I run the Apache server, it never crashes.

For the moment, I will continue to send error messages to Microsoft in the hope that they will correct the problem, but when I get tired of doing so, I will disable MSN on startup.

Uninstalled Google Desktop

I uninstalled Google Desktop because:

  1. It disappeared from my toolbar
  2. Updating Zonealarm requires GD shutdown
  3. I will reinstall after updating ZoneAlarm
  4. It gave an error message with MS Outlook

Use of WordPress as a Tourist information site for Melaka

I was impressed with AmazingMelaka.com, where WordPress is being used as a simple, but effective Tourism website.

I wrote a comment on the site:

Thanks for a great website and useful info. I enjoyed browsing.

Your maps were useful in helping find the exact location for St. Xavier Church using GoogleEarth (which now has detailed views of Melaka.)

Since you are using WordPress, you might wish to GeoTag your posts with the exact location of each entry. At present, maps.google.com has yet to be updated to the new images, but I’m sure they will update soon.

I have adapted the Geo plug-in, making it easy to use GoogleEarth to locate a building, then pasting the placemark kml to give the Latitude and Longitude.

You can see an example on my photography blog - just click on the word Location at the bottom of the post.

If you wish more info, please email.

Review of GoogleEarth 4.0 beta

ZDNet published an article about the new GoogleEarth 4.0 Beta. I wrote a quick comment.

The updates certainly look snazzy, but the program seems to crash every five minutes when I try to reposition the placemarks for the photos on http://www.reggie.net.

It’s good to see new high definition areas for places of interest in India and Japan - for example Taj Mahal.

Looking for customisable templates

Next stage is to choose a template that is approximately suitable, which will then be adapted for the new website.

Joomlabox0905

lite_blue-grey

rhuk_orange_smoothie

top_eye

xplike.plesk.blue.2

None of the above appear to have an integrated smf forum with the identical format.

I’ve uploaded them. Most give errors. This isn’t particularly good software.

Looking for images

A couple of images of mortar and pestles - here and here - that might be suitable.

Installing Joomla-smf bridge

I reinstalled Joomla v1.0.9 and smf on my localhost.

To install the bridge (Joomla-smf 1.1.2), you have to first unzip the actual zip file from the downloaded zip.

The “Component -> Joomla-SMF forum -> Installation” gave a problem with “Patch Joomla Source Files”.

This document gave a solution.

Installed smf forum, but now can’t log in as admin on Joomla

I’ve just installed smf (simple machines forum) on my localhost server, but now I can’t access the admin section of Joomla.

I shall delete all the files, remove the database and start from scratch.

On setup of Joomla 1.0.9, there was no error message - I assume the browser check error was corrected.

I cancelled the pop-up message “Confirm password change for…” I assume this is a popup from FireFox for storing the local passwords for auto-fill-in.

Selecting a forum to integrate with Joomla

Just checking round for a suitable forum to integrate with Joomla.

phpBB can be made to work using a bridge. However, it is one guy’s solution, with no guarantee of future updates.

The Joomla forum uses a SimpleMachines forum, which seems to be the better choice. The code does not use tables (though Joomla is still stuck with this).

Still, it means two separate user bases - until I can find some way of integrating them.

Now I have found a template chooser on joomlahacks.com.

Lots of hits from stumbleupon.com

The number of visitors to www.reggie.net went up to 2470 or so today. A lot of the referers were Firefox with the same referer string, so I initially thought I was being targeted by some IP spoofing robot. However, I see that stumbleupon is a plugin for Firefox, so it seems I have been rated highly by someone. I wonder if you can find out the ratings for a site?
